Michael Card was born on April 11, 1957 in Madison, Tenn. His father was a doctor, and his grandfather a Baptist Preacher. He holds an undergraduate degree in Biblical Studies from Western Kentucky University in 1979. He also had an assistantship and taught Physics and Astronomy in a masters program at WKU. Michael went on to receive a master's degree in biblical studies from Western Kentucky University in 1980. He and Susan have been married since 1983, and have four wonderful children (Katie, Will, Nathan and Maggie) whom they homeschool.
Anyone who is familiar with Michael Card's music has relished his ability to weave a story with word and melody. For almost two decades, his biblically based recordings have brought to life the Scriptures' most enigmatic characters and unraveled its most elliptical texts. From his 1981 debut album, First Light, Michael Card has used his knowledge of the Scriptures to create musical word pictures that spark the imagination and rekindle lagging faith. He has guided us on a holy journey, from the Old Testament prophets' promise of Christ, to Messiah's miraculous birth, life, death and resurrection, to the hope of His imminent return.
Michael Card's own musical journey began when he wrote a song as a favor to his pastor while earning a master's degree in biblical studies at Western Kentucky University. In the years that followed, he has penned some of Christian music's most cherished songs. He has released 20 recordings, and has authored or co-authored nine books. Collectively, his works have sold more than 4 million copies. He has earned five Gospel music Association Dove Awards. He has achieved 19 No. 1 songs on Christian radio charts. He was nominated for the C.S. Lewis Children's Book Award for Sleep Sound in Jesus, which was also a finalist for the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association Gold Medallion Award.
Though awards and recognition are always a welcome affirmation of any artist's work, this is not Michael's motivation. Michael states, ''The purpose of my music, books and concerts is to focus in on and worship Christ. The songs and writings are just vehicles to accomplish this purpose.'' Michael's desire is that these resources will assist in making Jesus Christ beautiful and believable to the world, and that men and women will come to understand the significance of listening to God's plan and purpose as it is revealed in their own lives.
